Planes, Trains & Amazon HQ2: Infrastructure Challenges in a Growing City
With the arrival of Amazon in Long Island City, the spotlight has only brightened upon the region’s infrastructure and transportation challenges. The area’s subways, roads, bridges, tunnels, railroads, airports and waterways are all in need of vast amounts of dollars to keep up with the pace of growth and development. Which are the most important priorities? What is the status of proposed projects? How will we get there from here? This panel, comprised of top infrastructure leaders, convenes to discuss the chronic challenges at hand and present a vision for the way forward, and how private developers and construction firms might be part of the solution.

DevTech 2019: Innovations in Building Design & Construction Technology
Necessity is the mother of invention, but innovation doesn’t happen by itself. Trying new things in new development and construction, with so much at risk, requires a disciplined practice of experimentation and tempered risk-taking. And yet a failure to innovate may end up in an inferior product in a competitive market place. How do top developers get out of their comfort zones without betting it all? This panel, comprised of active developers of office, retail and residential properties, explores the nuanced decision making behind such bold choices as Passive House, the Well standard, mass timber construction and radically unique design as a hedge against recession.

Opportunity Zones Workshop: What Developers and Construction Firms Need to Know
What You Need to Know about Opportunity Zones.
The Economic Opportunity Zones program was created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) in December of 2017 to provide substantial incentives to the private sector to invest long term in qualified low-income communities throughout the United States in order to spur economic development and job creation. The program seeks to utilize a portion of the trillions of dollars of unrealized capital gains (in the stock market and mutual funds alone) for development in these designated areas. In this workshop, we discuss the latest guidance on the provision.

Afternoon Workshop: What’s Trending Now in Adjacent Construction: a Practical Point of View
Performing construction next to existing properties can create significant headaches for everyone involved. Logistical, technical and legal problems can arise causing litigation, stop work orders and massive cost overruns. This interactive workshop addresses issues that arise when performing construction next to adjoining properties from the perspective of builders and developers. Workshop leaders will provide helpful advice regarding the negotiation of license agreements with neighbors, such as timing and scope of such agreements, and they will provide an analysis of the current status of the ever developing law in this area.

This panel, comprised of leaders representing tens of millions of square feet under development, discusses the current activity and future pipeline of office, residential, and industrial development and what it means to the industry.
